PM Modi Visits Melbourne Cricket Ground with Australian PM Albanese

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, visited the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and used sports diplomacy to celebrate the deep cultural ties between the two countries. The visit underscored cricket as a common language, a space between India and Australia that goes beyond the normal trade and political agreements.

Highlights of the MCG Visit

The visit to the historic stadium was more than a perfunctory walk-through, heavy on symbolic gestures and grassroots engagement:

Joint Sports Roadmap: The two leaders unveiled the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap. It aims to promote practical cooperation in sports training, sports science, technology and mutual investment in the sports industry.

BBL Heads to India: In a major announcement, Prime Minister Albanese announced that Australia’s Big Bash League will play its first official match on India soil. The season opener between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will take place on December 12 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Prime Ministers met young athletes on the pitch, playing exhibition games of cricket, Australian Rules Football (AFL) and Kabaddi, joined by Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan.Meet the Future Stars: The delegation was welcomed by legendary figures of the game like former Australian captains Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar.

Signing Jerseys & Meeting Mascots: PM Modi had a few lighter moments, signing custom jerseys for the young players and posing for photographs with Australia’s official sporting mascot, “Ruby the Roo”.

The Decade That Defined Sports

Modi said that the MCG had a certain energy to it. “Normally when you walk into the MCG, you feel the pressure of a last over finish. But this time it was all about the warmth of a bilateral friendship and the energy of future champions.

Both leaders noted that the two nations are entering a giant interconnected decade for global sports infrastructure. India is scheduled to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, and Australia is preparing for the 2032 Brisbane Summer Olympics. Both governments are planning to use the next few years to bring their commercial sports and tech industries into sharp alignment. Importantly, Australia also officially supported India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
