Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim Tariq Shot Dead in Islamabad

The daylight killing of Group Captain Asim Tariq has reverberated in Islamabad, sparking a huge manhunt and a very emotional conversation across the country on public safety and structural violence.

Split Second Call to Help

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon on Ninth Avenue near Shaheen Chowk, a highly secure and usually busy area of the capital near the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Headquarters and Air University.

Group Captain Tariq was coming out of his office when he saw a heated argument at the side of the road. A man on a motorcycle was arguing aggressively with a woman, trying to force her onto the motorcycle.

But the officer quickly recognised the danger and intervened to protect the woman and de-escalate the situation, giving the woman a brief window to escape across the road. But the suspect, identified by police as a man named Saad, turned all of his aggression towards the officer. There was a brief angry argument before Saad pulled out a handgun and shot Group Captain Tariq before speeding away into the afternoon traffic. Tragically, the officer succumbed to his fatal injuries at the scene.

The Real Story Comes Out

Police in the area quickly responded to the shooting, securing the scene of the crime and taking the shaken woman into protective custody. Her next statement completely turned the story of the random broad-daylight abduction attempt:

A Common Office Fight: The woman said the shooter was actually a co-worker at the office, not a stranger.
The Deception. He had promised her a routine motorbike ride to their office from Rawalpindi. But as he drove into Islamabad, he purposefully deviated from the route into a relatively deserted area. She saw what was happening, fought back violently and tried to escape and this was when Group Captain Tariq saw the fight and stepped in.

A Nation Mourns a Martyr: Group Captain Tariq is survived by his wife and two children. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has officially declared the officer a martyr who was killed in the line of civic duty while protecting a vulnerable citizen.

Law enforcement agencies had put Islamabad on high alert and set up checkpoints across the city and conducted targeted raids to bring the suspect to justice. Meanwhile, the military’s media wing is expected to issue an official and detailed statement on the tragic loss of one of their senior officers.
