Massive Ethanol Procurement Powers India's Green Energy Push

India's state-run oil marketing companies have gone all-in on green energy, purchasing a staggering 2,418 crore litres of ethanol over the past three years. This massive procurement drive translates to an incredible Rs 1.72 lakh crore pumped directly into the biofuel sector.

This financial milestone highlights just how serious the government is about scaling up domestic green fuels. By sourcing massive quantities of ethanol locally, the administration is not only cutting down on expensive foreign crude oil imports but also driving a powerful economic wave straight into the rural agricultural economy, turning crop waste and surplus grain into valuable energy resources.

Sticking to the Twenty Percent Blending Target for Now

Even with the huge surge in production and procurement, the government is hitting the pause button on pushing the blending limits any higher. Addressing questions in Parliament, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi cleared the air regarding future automotive fuel standards.

He explicitly stated that authorities have not made any official decision to increase the ethanol blending percentage in petrol beyond the current 20% milestone. After rushing to achieve the 20% target ahead of schedule, the administration has decided to take a breather. The current focus is entirely on consolidating these hard-won gains, stabilising nationwide supply chains, smoothing out distribution logistics, and ensuring everything runs like clockwork before even thinking about pushing the blending mandate any further.
