Nagaland Landslides Kill 8, Injure 15 in Mon District After Cloudburst

Nagaland’s Mon town saw a series of catastrophic landslides triggered by unremitting rains and a fierce cloudburst that killed dozens of people and destroyed property. Eight people were killed and 15 injured, some critically, when walls of mud, rock and debris buried clusters of houses overnight. Local authorities said destructive landslides hit at least 11 different places in the district headquarters, damaging houses, disrupting vital communication lines and severing road connectivity to the remote region completely, plunging families into sudden panic and despair.

Race against time to find survivors.

Dedicated emergency response teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police personnel, Assam Rifles and brave local volunteers, sprang into action to pull survivors from the unstable rubble under treacherous, waterlogged conditions. Rescue teams worked through the night, hacking through thick mud to clear blocked routes and ferry the injured to nearby medical facilities as more people were feared trapped under collapsed structures. The inclement weather, persistent rain and precarious terrain made relief efforts extremely difficult. Authorities fought against dangerous terrain and time to find every missing resident and bring comfort to the grieving community.

Government Response and Relief Actions

Following this major catastrophe, the Nagaland government has swung into action for relief and rehabilitation measures to help the victims. Officials announced ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹74,000 each for the injured towards meeting urgent medical and funeral expenses. Temporary relief camps were established and essential supplies were distributed to displaced families, while state agencies and district administrations were put on high alert.
