Heavy Rain Brings City to a Standstill

Heavy monsoon rains hit Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on Sunday disrupting normal life. Incessant rains have flooded roads and disrupted transport and daily life, with at least three people dead and four others injured in rain-related incidents.

Many low-lying areas were underwater and people had difficulty travelling. Traffic was heavy on the main roads and a number of vehicles were stuck. Waterlogging and poor visibility also delayed services of local trains and buses.

Flights delayed, airport operations

Heavy rain also disrupted flights at Mumbai airport. Poor weather conditions, which reduced visibility and made aircraft movement difficult, disrupted flight services for nearly an hour. Although airport operations later resumed, several flights were delayed, causing inconvenience to passengers.

Schools and Colleges Shut Down

The Maharashtra government, in view of public safety, declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and the neighbouring Thane district on July 5. The decision was taken to prevent students and staff from travelling in dangerous weather, officials said

Authorities on High Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is continuing to monitor the weather, and disaster response teams, civic officials, and emergency services are on alert. Rescue teams have been placed on standby for flood-prone areas, and citizens have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel, especially near flooded roads, rivers, and coasts.

Officials said more heavy rain could fall over the next 24 hours and urged people to stay alert and heed weather advisories.
