'Lost 8.25 Kg, May Lose Life': Delhi HC Steps In Over Wangchuk's Hunger Strike
Concerned over the deteriorating health of climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who is on indefinite hunger strike, the Delhi High Court Tuesday sought response from the Centre on the plea. Wangchuk had lost 8.25 kg during the fast and his condition could become life threatening in the next two days without immediate medical attention, the plea said.

Petition lists major health concerns

The petition sought a direction to the authorities to conduct regular medical tests and provide necessary medical care while respecting Wangchuk’s constitutional right to peaceful protest. It said that prolonged fasting without proper medical supervision could cause irreversible health complications.

The High Court during the hearing issued a notice to the Central government seeking its reply on the allegations leveled in the petition. Taking note of the urgency of the matter, the court listed the matter for further hearing after the Centre files its reply.
Health Concerns Mount as Hunger Strike Continues
Wangchuk, who is known for his work in environmental conservation and sustainable development in Ladakh, began the fast unto death demanding constitutional safeguards, environmental protection and local governance in the Union Territory.

His condition has deteriorated drastically after days of denial of food and he needs immediate intervention, the plea said. It also called on the authorities to enter into constructive dialogue with the activist to find solutions to the issues through peaceful negotiations.
