Kim Jong Un Oversees Weapons Tests Aboard North Korea’s New Naval Destroyer

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, personally oversaw another round of weapons tests from the country’s latest warship, state media reported.

The drills, which involved the firing of a nuclear-capable cruise missile, were held aboard the freshly commissioned naval destroyer Kang Kon.

Tests carried out on the new destroyer
The KCNA reported that North Korea conducted weapons drills from its new 5,000-ton destroyer _Kang Kon_. Kim was there to observe the drills, which included launching a nuclear-capable cruise missile and other on-board weapon systems.

The tests were part of efforts to modernise the navy and boost military readiness, state media said.

Drive for naval modernisation
The Kang Kon is one of Pyongyang's newest ships and is seen as a key step in expanding North Korea's maritime defence.

Kim reportedly told the inspection that the navy should be equipped with advanced weapons to bolster the country's overall defence strategy. The move comes as North Korea continues to heavily invest in missile technology and military development.

Increasing regional worries
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are still high, and the latest tests are likely to attract close attention from South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

The drills show Pyongyang is determined to continue to upgrade its military capabilities in defiance of ongoing international sanctions, analysts say. North Korean military activity is closely monitored in the region due to its implications for regional stability.
