Kargil War: 27 Years Later, Several Pakistani Soldiers Still Buried on Indian Soil

The story remains, even in the core of one of the most fierce conflicts between India and Pakistan, as an instance of dignity shown to fallen soldiers.

Did not collect several bodies  
Indian troops retrieved the bodies of Pakistani soldiers from high-altitude posts in Kargil, Dras and Batalik during the war. But officials said Pakistan declined to officially acknowledge a number of them, though many were identified and exchanged.

With no claimant, the Indian Army was stuck deciding the final rites. Military records at the time state that dog tags, documents and personal effects were recovered, but Islamabad did not respond to requests to take custody.

India held military funerals  
The Indian Army gave the unclaimed soldiers a military burial with full military honours despite the war. The bodies were respectfully wrapped, prayers offered as possible according to Islamic traditions, and graves marked.

Officers: Captain Muhammad Ammar Hussain  
One name that crops up in accounts of the conflict is Captain Muhammad Ammar Hussain. His family has spoken publicly through the years about the loss and emotional toll of the war.

His grave, one of many, remains in the area and is occasionally visited by locals and military men. The stories of these soldiers are often told during Kargil remembrance events.

The human cost of war 
The lost graves are a reminder of the human toll of conflict for military historians and families on both sides. In India, the Kargil War is remembered as a victory that pushed back infiltrators, but it also left lasting scars.

Discussions on military ethics still mention how India performed the last rites with honours. With the 27th anniversary coming up, the graves are a silent testament to the respect given in war and to families still seeking closure.
