Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill Dies at 78, Fans and Film Industry Mourn Cinema Icon

The news has been greeted with grief by fans and colleagues across the globe.

Family Verifies Death
Neill died peacefully in Sydney, surrounded by his family, his family said in a statement posted on Neill’s official Instagram account. 

In a statement, they remember 'a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend' and asked to be left alone during this difficult time.

The look of Jurassic Park
Neill gained international renown as the palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film Jurassic Park. With his calm, curious, and brave performance, he made the character one of the most iconic scientists in the history of film.

He reprised his role in 2022's Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World: Dominion, thrilling fans with his reunion alongside Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum. Many thought he was the franchise’s heart.

50 years in the industry
Neill has also had a hugely versatile career in film and TV, apart from dinosaurs.

He won critical praise for The Piano, Dead Calm, and The Hunt for Red October. He also starred in cult classics like Event Horizon and later on TV with The Tudors and Peaky Blinders. 

With more than 50 years of work behind him, Neill’s dry wit and down-to-earth manner made him comfortable in everything from thrillers and dramas to period pieces and blockbusters, winning him the respect of critics and audiences alike.

One fan wrote: “From Jurassic Park to Peaky Blinders, he brought depth and warmth to every role. Another described him as “the definition of a movie legend".
