IT Rout Weighs Heavy on Markets: Sensex, Nifty Close Sharply Lower
Indian stock markets ended sharply lower, with the Sensex losing over 550 points and the Nifty closing below 24,100. HCL Technologies fell nearly 5% after its quarterly results, dragging the IT sector and weighing on overall market sentiment.
Equity benchmarks closed sharply lower on Tuesday with the Sensex down over 550 points and the Nifty 50 closing below the crucial 24,100 mark. The decline was led by heavy selling in information technology (IT) stocks with HCL Technologies being one of the biggest losers as its shares fell nearly 5% after announcing its quarterly earnings.
Markets dragged down by IT stocks
A weaker-than-expected market reaction for HCL Tech weighed on the broader IT sector and investor sentiment remained under pressure. Investors digested the company’s quarterly results and outlook, and the stock was sold off heavily. Other large IT companies were also in red and contributed significantly to the fall of the benchmark indices on the day.
Market analysts said investors were cautious on worries over global demand, earnings growth and mixed signals from international markets.
Wider Market Also Under Pressure
The selling wasn’t confined to the IT sector. Profit-booking in several banking, financial and auto stocks also led to a broad-based decline across the sectors. Market breadth turned weak with the BSE Sensex closing over 550 points down and the NSE Nifty falling below the psychological mark of 24,100.
Midcap and smallcap stocks also closed lower as investors preferred to reduce risk after the sharp fall in frontline shares.
Investors Await More Earnings
The corporate earnings season is in full swing and is likely to play a role in trading in the next few weeks, and market participants are watching closely. Analysts say company guidance and management commentary are likely to remain the key drivers of investor sentiment.
Expectations around interest rates, foreign institutional investor (FII) activity and geopolitical developments are likely to determine the near-term direction of Indian equities, say experts.
