India's Green Energy Push Is Driven by an Ethanol-Blended Petrol Program, Says Government
The government has described the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme as a key pillar of India's energy security and clean fuel strategy.
The Center has reiterated that a key component of India's plan to attain energy security, lessen reliance on imported crude oil, and encourage cleaner transportation is the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Program. According to the government, the program has become one of the most important biofuel initiatives in the nation, providing advantages for agriculture, the environment, and the economy.

The EBP Programme aims to blend ethanol with petrol, which is largely produced from sugarcane, maize and other agricultural feedstocks. The move will bring down the country’s import bill and upgrade energy security by increasing the proportion of ethanol produced domestically in fuel thus decreasing India’s reliance on imported crude oil.
According to officials, the initiative has advanced remarkably in recent years, with a notable increase in ethanol mixing levels. Additionally, the effort has supported India's climate commitments and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The government emphasized that by raising the market for agricultural products utilized in the manufacturing of ethanol, the program has given farmers an extra source of income. Improved revenue streams have also helped sugar mills and distilleries pay off outstanding debts to sugarcane growers more quickly.
Additionally, by promoting investment in ethanol producing facilities, the EBP Program has supported rural economic growth and created job possibilities.

According to the Center, ethanol-blended gasoline burns cleaner than regular gasoline, lowering carbon emissions and enhancing air quality.
