Indian Railways Loses ₹104.51 Crore As Passengers Steal Towels, Bedsheets And Pillow Covers

Fresh concerns over misuse of public property have been raised as official data show that over 1.27 crore bedroll items, including towels, bedsheets, blankets and pillow covers, went missing from AC coaches between 2019 and 2024.

1.27 crore linen articles go missing
Railway records indicate that passengers were allegedly taking away bedrolls provided for their use during journeys in air-conditioned rail coaches. 

The missing stock includes towels, bedsheets, blankets and pillow covers – all to be washed and reused for other travellers.

Loss Crosses ₹100 Crore Barrier
The stolen linen has resulted in a financial loss of ₹104.51 crore. 

Officials say the constant need to replace these items puts additional pressure on public funds and increases operational costs. Every year, railways have to spend crores to just maintain the basic linen stock.

Railway Property Is Not To Be Taken
Railway authorities have appealed to passengers not to take away linen from trains. An official said, “These are for use only during the journey.” “Taking them home affects the quality of service for other passengers and adds to the burden on taxpayers.”

Measures To Curb Thefts Underway
Indian Railways is considering ways to cut losses, such as:
-  Greater vigilance and stocktaking in AC coaches
-  Better tracking systems for bedrolls 
-  Campaigns to make passengers aware of not taking away railway property

Public cooperation is essential, officials say. They say that protecting government property will help to keep services cleaner and cheaper for everyone.
