Indian Diplomat Objects to Incorrect Jammu and Kashmir Map at SAARC Seminar in Dhaka

This exchange at a SAARC seminar in Dhaka has renewed online discussions on territorial representation at international forums.

India objects to the SAARC event
The incident happened during a presentation by Ahmed Tariq Karim, the former Bangladesh High Commissioner to India.

A wrong map of Jammu and Kashmir was shown on the screen during the session. High Commission official Pooja Kumari Jha immediately raised the issue. 

She objected to the depiction, saying it was not the official position of India, and sought that her intervention be recorded.

The official stand was reiterated by India
In her response, Pooja Kumari Jha restated India’s long-held position.

“The stand of the government on the issue remains the same. The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India,” she said. 

Her remarks highlighted India’s focus on ensuring an accurate depiction of its borders in official and international arenas.

The incident draws online attention
A video of the exchange has since gone viral on social media.

Many users praised the diplomat for quickly flagging the mistake. Others seized the opportunity to discuss the need to use internationally accepted and officially recognised maps at diplomatic events.

The clip has also triggered a wider debate on how sensitive territorial issues should be dealt with in regional forums like SAARC that bring together delegates from different countries.
