India-US Trade Deal Very Close, Awaits Competitive Tariff Edge: Piyush Goyal

India and the United States are close to a major bilateral trade deal, but New Delhi is not prepared to cross the finish line just to get it done.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal clarified that though a final agreement is very close, India will sign on the dotted line only if the terms offer a clear tariff advantage for Indian exporters over global competitors. The day that happens, the deal is on,” Goyal said at the India Global Forum’s UK-India Week in London, making India’s position clear.

Why Competitive Edge Matters

The entire objective of the trade deal for India is to make its products cheaper in the US market than products of other countries. The negotiation framework is designed to give Indian goods lower import duties than manufacturing hubs elsewhere in Asia. India is not asking for any special treatment. We are asking for a level playing field,' Goyal said. "We are asking for recognition of our economic interests, and we want to compete aggressively in the world."

Time Is Running Out

The rush to agree terms comes at a critical juncture. The broad outlines of this first-phase deal were initially locked in on February 6, and teams from both sides have been working around the clock since then to iron out the finer details.

Negotiators are running short of time:

A temporary 10 per cent U.S. tariff regime will expire on July 24.

The Risk: If no deal is reached by then, a new tariff structure could take over, plunging export-heavy sectors back into a cloud of trade uncertainty.

Wrapping It Up

Goyal said after a two-day intense meeting with the US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, in New Delhi. Both sides have been able to iron out most of the bumps, but the Commerce Ministry has held back, saying it will not declare all differences settled until the final tariff protections are spelt out.

Looking Forward

As the talks head into their very last lap, the economic stakes could not be higher. The U.S. is one of the most important trading partners of India, and the bilateral trade is worth tens of billions of dollars. If India can secure these specific tariff concessions in the coming weeks, it could unleash a huge wave of growth for domestic exporters and fundamentally reshape supply chain dynamics.
