India Set to Cross 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity Soon, Says Pralhad Joshi

India's incredible rush to a greener future

India is on the cusp of a truly historic landmark in its clean energy narrative. The country’s installed non-fossil fuel capacity has zoomed past 297 GW, which means it is just a hair’s breadth away from crossing the monumental 300 GW mark, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi declared. The country has transformed its energy landscape at a breathtaking pace over the last decade, proving that rapid economic growth and aggressive climate action can go hand in hand.

This tremendous momentum is fuelled by explosive gains in a number of green sectors. Solar power has changed beyond recognition, growing nearly 58-fold from a modest 2.8 GW in 2014 to about 162 GW today. Wind energy has now also grown to 57.4 GW, and bioenergy, nuclear and large hydro assets continue to add steady baseline stability. India's domestic manufacturing has surged from 2M to a whopping 200 GW of solar module capacity, catapulting the country into the league of world powerhouses of green self-reliance.

Grassroots Energy Revolution and Worldwide Aspirations

What is so special about India’s renewable surge is that it is so deeply inclusive and grassroots. Flagship government initiatives like PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and the PM-KUSUM scheme are directly empowering common citizens, bringing rooftop solar to millions of households and reducing electricity bills for families across the nation.

The Central Electricity Authority, meanwhile, foretells a dizzying future. Non-fossil fuel capacity is likely to jump to 786 GW by 2035-36, accounting for nearly 70% of the country’s entire power grid. In the next decade, India will get its biggest power source from solar, with the government investing in new battery storage and pumped-hydro projects.
