India, Indonesia Sign 20 Major MoUs; Key Highlights on Malacca Cooperation, BrahMos, Critical Minerals
New Delhi, Nov 7 (PTI) India and Indonesia on Tuesday signed 20 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering a wide range of areas including defence, maritime security, trade, digital technology, education, health care and critical minerals in a major push to bilateral ties. The accords underscore the two countries’ resolve to deepen their historic strategic partnership and boost cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
New Delhi, Nov. 7 (PTI)—India and Indonesia on Tuesday signed 20 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering a wide range of areas, including defence, maritime security, trade, digital technology, education, health care, and critical minerals in a major push to bilateral ties. The accords underscore the two countries’ resolve to deepen their historic strategic partnership and boost cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
All Signed Agreements
The Memorandums of Understanding cover a wide range of subjects with a view to promoting economic development, technological cooperation, and human relations. Both countries stressed the importance of working together to resolve regional issues, foster sustainable development, and strengthen institutional cooperation. The deals are expected to deepen ties and open up new trade opportunities between the two countries.
Priority to defence cooperation
Defence was a major topic for discussion. Indonesia and India eye expanding defence cooperation. Indonesia and India talked about prospects for greater cooperation with India’s indigenous defence systems, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and Astra air-to-air missile. They also agreed to deepen cooperation in military training, capacity building, and defence manufacturing, showing growing confidence in the strategic partnership between the two sides.
Be mindful of maritime security.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation while acknowledging the strategic importance of the Malacca Strait. The topics of safe navigation, enhanced information sharing, and intensifying efforts to fight illicit fishing, piracy, and other threats to maritime security were also covered. This will likely increase the stability of one of the world's busiest shipping channels.
Digital Cooperation and Critical Minerals
Both countries also discussed possible cooperation on digital governance and electoral management. Indonesia has shown interest in learning from India’s experience with electronic voting machines (EVMs). They also agreed to collaborate to ensure the supply of critical minerals needed for advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technology.
New phase of bilateral cooperation
Officials described the signing of 20 Memorandums of Understanding as a landmark in India-Indonesia relations. The two countries want to make their alliance more resilient, beefing up. It's up to greater cooperation in the military, trade, digital innovation, and strategic resources. “The agreements should bring new opportunities for long-term cooperation and economic development and increase stability in the region.
