Huge Reserves to Support India’s Nuclear Power and Energy Security Drive

Australia has about 28% of the world’s known uranium reserves and is giving a big boost to India’s shift to cleaner, more reliable power. Australia does not produce nuclear power or have nuclear weapons, but it exports almost all of its mined uranium under stringent international protocols for use only in civilian, peaceful applications.

This partnership was put in motion way back in 2014, when a bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement was signed, opening the floodgates for long-term fuel shipments to flow directly into Indian reactors. These huge reserves can be tapped by India as a very reliable fuel supply, which is significant as the country seeks to reduce its heavy reliance on fossil fuels, like coal, and reduce overall carbon emissions.
