Violence erupts in Central Delhi
Central Delhi continued to remain tense on Monday after stone-pelting incidents were reported near Connaught Place during a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). What started out as a peaceful demonstration turned chaotic when sections of protesters clashed with security personnel, throwing the busy commercial district into panic.
The police moved swiftly to reassert control, deploying extra officers to ensure the violence would not spread to nearby neighborhoods.
Police appeal for calm
Residents, commuters appealed to remain calm and not to believe or share unverified information on social media: Delhi Police Officials said they are monitoring the situation closely and have taken the necessary steps to maintain law and order.
Officials also advised people to avoid unnecessary travel near Connaught Place and areas around it till the situation is fully under control.
Tightened security in the capital
Security has been beefed up across Delhi, ahead of the protest, especially around Parliament, government buildings, metro stations and other prominent public places. Barricades were erected, traffic was diverted and rapid action teams put on standby to respond to any disturbance.
Surveillance was tightened and police kept the crowds under close watch to prevent any escalation after the stone-pelting incident.
Under investigation
The authorities are looking at CCTV footage and other evidence in an attempt to identify those responsible for the violence. Officials said that strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in unlawful activities.
