Government Unveils Expert Panel to Overhaul India's Examination System

Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani will lead the panel, which will discuss how to improve transparency, security and efficiency in school, college and competitive exams.

Reforms in Examinations to be Led by Expert Team  
The task force is made up of professionals from education, technology, law enforcement and public administration. 

The committee will look into the existing gaps in the examination process — from paper setting and printing to evaluation and grievance redressal — and suggest practical measures to strengthen credibility, the government said.

The officials said the panel’s mandate is to develop a system that is secure, scalable and fair for the millions of students who appear for exams every year. The committee is expected to deliver its report in the next few months.

Technology and Security Take Center Stage  
A key priority for the panel will be using technology to prevent irregularities. 

The panel is expected to recommend stronger digital safeguards to prevent paper leaks, real-time monitoring of question papers, AI-based evaluation, and more transparent processing of results. 

It will also look into the data security protocols and infrastructure used by national and state-level examination bodies. 
Technology has to help restore confidence in the system,” a senior Education Ministry official said.

Rebuilding Student Confidence 
The move follows complaints by students and parents about exam irregularities and delays in recent years. 

The government said it wants to rebuild trust by making the process more reliable and student-friendly. The panel will seek the opinions of students, teachers, universities and coaching institutions before making recommendations.

The move was met with approval from educators who said reforms needed to strike a balance between security and accessibility so that students from all backgrounds benefit.

Recommendations for Shaping Future Policies  
The committee will make its recommendations to the government once the review is complete. These could have implications for future national policies on the running, watching and judging of exams.

With competitive exams playing a role in the careers of millions, the panel is expected to draw a roadmap for a modern, digital-first examination framework in India.
