New Delhi, Dec 1 (PTI) WhatsApp has responded to the notice issued by the central government on the messaging platform’s proposed ‘username’ feature and officials are now studying the company’s explanation before taking the next step, sources said. The move comes amid rising concerns over users’ privacy, digital safety and compliance with India’s information technology rules.

MeitY had earlier issued a notice to WhatsApp seeking clarification on the rollout of the username feature. The government was interested in how the new system was going to work, what impacts it could have on user identification and whether it is in line with existing legal and regulatory structures.
Officials said the ministry was closely examining the response of WhatsApp to see if the feature was in compliance with Indian laws and protected the interests of users.
The proposed username feature is expected to enable users to communicate without revealing their mobile numbers, just like other messaging apps. They could have unique usernames and talk to each other without exchanging phone numbers, which adds another layer of privacy.
