Violence broke out near Parliament during protest

Tension continued in central Delhi on Wednesday as violence erupted between police and supporters of Chalo Janta Party (CJP) during a protest march to Parliament. The protest, which started with thousands of supporters converging at different locations, turned violent after protesters allegedly tried to break through security barricades near Sansad Marg, one of the most heavily guarded areas of the city.

Five policemen hurt

At least five police personnel were injured in the clash, the Delhi Police said. Some protesters ignored repeated warnings to disperse officials said and pushed through barricades and resorted to stone-pelting. To control the situation, police fired tear gas shells and used water cannons to prevent the crowd from advancing towards the Parliament complex.

In parts of central Delhi, authorities suspended mobile internet services as a precautionary measure to check the spread of rumours and prevent any further escalation. Security was also tightened around Parliament, North Block, South Block and various other vital government installations. More police and paramilitary men were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

CJP accused of stifling dissent

The CJP led the protest to press its demands for governance and political reforms. Party leaders said protesters were exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and accused the administration of cutting back on democratic rights. They also claimed police used excessive force to disperse demonstrators gathered for the march.

Police Stand by Their Action

Delhi Police said prohibitory orders were already in place in the high-security zone around Parliament and the organisers were told of the designated protest places. Officials said force was used only after protesters allegedly violated restrictions, attempting to enter restricted areas despite repeated appeals.
