Alia Bhatt and Sharvari shine, but a lifeless spy thriller misses the mark: Alpha Review
Alpha features strong performances from Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, with an exciting cameo by Hrithik Roshan. However, a predictable screenplay and lack of emotional depth prevent the spy thriller from living up to its promise.
Alia Bhatt and Sharvari are the lead stars of Yash Raj Films’ Alpha, the newest addition to the studio’s ever-growing Spy Universe and comes with huge expectations. With slick visuals, large scale action sequences and a surprise appearance by Hrithik Roshan the film promises an adrenaline filled cinematic experience. But for all its star power and big ambitions, “Alpha” is not a gripping spy thriller.
It’s about two elite agents on a high-stakes mission with national security, international conspiracies and dangerous adversaries. The premise has all the ingredients of an engaging espionage drama but the screenplay doesn’t sustain the momentum. The story is often predictable, with long stretches of little tension or emotional depth.
Good acting, bad story.
Alia Bhatt plays the action heroine part with conviction and brings energy and confidence to her performance. She fits well with her. She displays a lot of physical agility and emotional sincerity. The chemistry between the two leads is one of the film's strongest points and they perform the demanding action sequences convincingly.
Hrithik Roshan's special appearance is very exciting and it also links Alpha to the bigger YRF Spy Universe. His screen time is however limited and not enough to elevate the overall narrative. The supporting cast are all very good, but the characters are not fully developed due to weak writing.
Alpha also looks good visually, with sleek cinematography, international locations and slick production values. Action choreography is slick and technically sound, with a number of well-executed chase and combat sequences. These are its strengths, but the movie lacks the emotional stakes and suspense needed to keep viewers invested.
The biggest failing is the screenplay, which depends on familiar spy film tropes without any fresh twists or memorable character arcs. The dialogues lack impact and there are a few scenes that seem stretched and slow down the pace of the film.
Style Over Substance
Alpha has some entertainment value for action spectacle lovers with its visuals and performances. But if you want a tightly constructed espionage thriller, you might be disappointed. Not even the collective charisma of Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and Hrithik Roshan can compensate for a story that never quite reaches its potential.
All in all, Alpha is an ambitious addition to the Spy Universe, stylish but not substantive, a visually appealing, but emotionally underwhelming cinematic experience.
