Why Protests Pushed Zelenskyy to Appoint a Younger Military Chief

Public Outrage and the Match That Ignited It

It began with an unexpected government shake-up, a political crisis that forced the hand of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the popular 35-year-old defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov ousted. Fedorov, a former tech entrepreneur, had won the public imagination — especially among younger citizens — by pushing for military modernisation, expanding drone automation and working to root out corruption. The civil society was shocked when Zelenskyy dismissed him after an irreconcilable spat with the military leadership. Immediately thousands of protesters poured into the streets in Kyiv and other cities, seeing the move as a betrayal of key reforms and a capitulation to bureaucratic obstinacy.

Confront the Old Guard and Demand Accountability

The public fury soon extended beyond the sacking of Fedorov to the man seen as responsible for his departure: General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the 60-year-old commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Protesters, veterans and active-duty soldiers increasingly criticised Syrskyi as a symbol of a rigid, top-down command culture blamed by many for heavy, unnecessary casualties in high-attrition battles. Moreover, with the reports of administrative strains and command failures, the public trust in Syrskyi’s leadership plummeted completely. As street demonstrations swelled and high-ranking defence officials started to resign in solidarity, it was clear the public wanted a fundamental break with the military’s past doctrines.

Welcoming a New Generation of Leadership

Knowing the immense power of public opinion, Zelenskyy caved to the popular outcry and fired Syrskyi, replacing him with 43-year-old general Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new commander-in-chief. Drapatyi, an acclaimed leader in combat, recognised for his tactical flexibility and backing of modernisation efforts, epitomises the younger generation that was wholly formed in the crucible of the war against Russia. Zelenskyy’s move to bring in a new face to lead the armed forces was intended to placate a restless country, mend fences with reformist groups and herald a bellicose pivot to technology-driven warfare to save soldiers’ lives on the front lines.
