Vijay's Jana Nayagan Awarded 'A' Certificate by CBFC Ahead of Release

The seven-month-long tug of war between the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the makers of Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film, Jana Nayagan, has finally come to an end with the movie receiving an 'A' (Adults Only) certificate.

The certification ends one of the longest censor battles in recent times in Tamil cinema, finalising the theatrical runtime to 3 hours and 3 minutes.

Legal challenges and internal board disputes sent the road to the big screen off course:

December 2025 - The Submission: The film is submitted for review by production banner KVN Productions. The examining committee had earlier indicated that the film would clear with a U/A 16+ rating with some modifications.

January 2026 – Internal Objections & Court Battles The process was halted just before its scheduled release on January 9 Pongal after an internal committee member raised a, Pongal,tion, saying some scenes could be hurtful to public sentiments. The controversy snowballed into a legal battle that escalated from the Madras High Court to the Supreme Court before producers decided to withdraw their petition and approach the revising committee of CBFC.

April 2026 – The Piracy Crisis: Things got even worse when an unfinished high-definition cut of the film was leaked online. Later, investigators said the pirated copy had been viewed nearly 1.2 crore times before it was successfully blocked. A freelance film editor was arrested.

What it means and what’s coming next

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan carries massive weight, as it is widely regarded as Vijay's final cinematic outing before he transitions full-time into politics. Ironically, the seven-month delay means the film will now release after Vijay has already taken over as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

An ‘A’ certificate usually means no family audiences and no younger fans, but the industry has largely taken the resolution as a relief. But the producers have now jumped that hurdle and locked in a global theatrical release window, eyeing July 24, 2026. Tamil Nadu alone is expected to see the film release on around 1,000 screens with domestic distributors already gearing up to do so.
