UK Defence Secretary Says Europe Was 'Shaken Out of Complacency' by Trump

Defence Secretary Highlights Changing Security Priorities  
Speaking this week, the UK Defence Secretary said Europe’s approach to defence has shifted dramatically in recent years. 

He noted that global conflicts and rising geopolitical tensions have pushed European nations to invest more in their own military capabilities rather than relying heavily on US support.

“The world has changed. Europe has to change with it,” he said.

Trump's Pressure Changed the Debate  
The minister credited President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for NATO members to meet spending targets with forcing a long-overdue conversation in Europe.

“Those messages were uncomfortable at the time, but they shook Europe out of complacency,” he said. “In the long run, Europe will probably thank him for it.”

Trump consistently urged NATO allies to reach the 2% GDP defence spending goal during his presidency.

Europe Increasing Defence Spending 
Since then, several European countries have announced higher military budgets and plans to modernise equipment. Defence cooperation within the EU and NATO has also deepened, with more joint exercises and procurement projects.

Officials say the goal is to ensure Europe can respond quickly to crises while still working closely with the United States.

Focus on Stronger European Security
The remarks come as NATO and European leaders continue talks on regional stability, Ukraine, and long-term deterrence. 

The UK Defence Secretary said Britain remains committed to European security and will work to ensure the continent is better prepared for future threats.
