The Constant Fear of Another Breakdown
Imagine sitting outside in a plastic chair in the dead of night, staring at your cracked front door, too afraid to go inside because the ground beneath your feet just won’t stop moving. That is the situation in northern Venezuela today. On Sunday everyone was back out on the streets after a 4.8 aftershock. It didn't knock down any more walls, but it shattered what sense of security people had left.
A neighbourhood turned into a survival zone
Honestly, this place is a living hell. We just had two big quakes, a 7.2 and a 7.5, one right after the other. It levelled entire districts, trapping families in their homes and transforming peaceful, everyday lives into a brutal fight for survival.
Waiting for a Sign of Life
All that remains is the rubble. Tired rescue teams, neighbours and volunteers work through the night. They dig with everything they have, heavy bulldozers, shovels, and often just their bare hands, trying to get the concrete out. Sometimes people shout for dead-quiet. The machines quieted; everyone waited breathlessly, listening, hoping for a faint cough, a cry, a weak tapping of someone trapped beneath the heavy slabs.
Meanwhile, local emergency rooms are overwhelmed. Doctors and first responders are running on pure adrenaline, way past their breaking points.
Parks Packed As Supply Lines Cut
Nowhere is safe any more for tens of thousands of people. They are sleeping on cots in crowded gymnasiums, or out in open parks, or crammed inside their cars because the idea of going back under a concrete roof is frightening. Relief groups are doing their best to get water, hot food and baby formula out, but it's incredibly difficult to get the trucks through the broken roads.
waiting and praying for the stillness on earth
Officials are asking people to steer clear of damaged buildings. They say the constant little quakes could take the rest down easily. For now, all anyone can do is wait and keep digging for the missing and hope the ground will finally calm down.
