Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Fast After Key Talks With Centre

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting after which the breakthrough happened.

Four-hour meeting crucial 
Wangchuk and his delegation spent nearly four hours meeting senior government officials. The discussions were around education reforms, protection of land and culture in Ladakh and tighter measures against irregularities in recruitment exams.

Both sides called the talks constructive.

Written undertakings from the Centre 
The government then gave written undertakings. These include ongoing deliberations on Ladakh’s demands, steps to improve examination systems to prevent paper leaks and a review of policies affecting the region.

"The promises gave me the confidence to call off the protest," Wangchuk said.

Wangchuk formally ended his fast on Tuesday to cheers from supporters who had gathered in Leh. His health had been closely monitored by doctors during the last week of the strike.

The protesters said the agitation had brought the nation’s focus on the concerns of Ladakh and the larger issue of fairness in education and recruitment.

The focus shifts to implementation 
Now that the protest is over, all eyes are on how quickly the government delivers on its promises. Education experts and student groups said they will be looking for concrete steps on exam reforms and policy changes.

“I remain committed to peaceful advocacy and hope the dialogue continues,” Wangchuk said.
