RJ Naved's Satirical Video Sparks Debate on Media Coverage of Student Protests

In the clip, which has been shared on social media, the actor humorously asks if the prime-time studio debates are distracting from what’s really happening on the ground.

TV news coverage is the target of satire  
In a viral video, RJ Naved plays a news anchor and jokes about how many channels would rather have shouting matches in the studio than report from the protest sites where students have been gathering for days.

He shows visuals of heated panel discussions and juxtaposes them with short clips of students holding placards near Jantar Mantar. The punchline: “The studio has the breaking news; the real story is outside.”

The satire was tongue-in-cheek, but the message was serious. Naved humorously questioned if media priorities represent the actual demands of the protesters.

Video is eye candy on the web  
Within hours, the clip went viral on Instagram, X and YouTube Shorts. A lot of people appreciated RJ Naved for making a serious point by using humour.

“Someone finally said it with a laugh,” one comment read. “That’s what it feels like watching the news these days,” another wrote.

The video also inspired memes with people making their own “studio vs ground” coverage. Student groups circulated it, saying it captured their frustration at being talked about instead of talked to.

Differing views arise  
Many bought into the satire; others pushed back. Some viewers said TV news has to cover many issues at the same time and can’t send teams to every protest site.

“Newsrooms are understaffed. They cover politics, economy and protests too,” one user argued. 

Media experts also had their say, pointing out that there’s room for both ground reporting and debate formats. But they agreed that the balance between the two is key, especially in times of public unrest.

RJ Naved himself tweeted later that the video was not intended to target any particular channel. “You’re just holding a mirror up. “Students deserve to be listened to,” he said.

His video has added a new dimension to the conversation, not only about what students are demanding but also about how their voices are being represented, as protests continue in Delhi.
