Rejected at First, Chosen Forever: Arun Govil Opens Up About Becoming the Iconic Lord Ram
Arun Govil revealed that he was initially rejected for the role of Lord Ram before being cast in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan. Speaking at a Delhi event, he reflected on the life-changing role and shared his excitement about portraying King Dasharath in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming Ramayana.
New Delhi : Veteran actor and BJP MP Arun Govil has revealed that he was initially rejected for the role of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV series Ramayan and that it was only after that that he became popular in India. Speaking at the 'Ramayana: Pratham Sankalp' event at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Govil talked about the twists of fate that landed him playing one of Indian television's most revered characters.
The Rejection That Made It All
Govil shared his journey and said that when he first met filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, he was not considered good enough to play Lord Ram. But instead of that, the makers tried to cast him as Bharat or Lakshman. But Govil was sure he was meant to play Lord Ram and politely declined the other roles. In the end his confidence paid off when the casting process changed and he was offered the lead role.
The actor confessed he never thought the character would connect with audiences so much. Even decades after the show was first telecast in 1987, millions of people still associate him with Lord Ram and it still is one of the most iconic performances in Indian television history.
A Living Legacy
“Ramayan is much more than a television serial, it is a story of values, duty, sacrifice and righteousness, which is a continuous inspiration for generations,” Govil said. He credited the vision of Ramanand Sagar and viewers love to make the series a timeless classic.
The actor also thanked the love he continues to get from fans all over the country. “It has been an honour to play Lord Ram and a lifetime responsibility,” he says.
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: A Full-Circle Moment
Govil also spoke about his role in director Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming movie Ramayana, in which he will be seen playing the role of Lord Ram’s father King Dasharath. “It’s a full circle moment in my career and I’m excited to be part of a new retelling of the epic,” he said. He commended the filmmakers for treating the story with sincerity while using modern filmmaking techniques to present the timeless story to a new generation of viewers.
