Local authorities in southwestern France issued mandatory evacuation orders for the popular Atlantic coast Cap Ferret peninsula in the Gironde department, evacuating people by both land and sea. Emergency responders describe the massive wildfire as an intense and highly unpredictable disaster that has already burned more than 12,500 hectares of dense pine forest. Raging flames threatened to cut off the peninsula’s last remaining land route, as authorities sent out emergency boats to evacuate hundreds of stranded tourists and local residents from piers. French interior officials said tens of thousands had been safely evacuated from Gironde and the neighboring Landes. Spain declares national emergency as Madrid area blazes rage

Meanwhile, the Spanish government formally declared a state of national emergency as a series of out-of-control blazes dangerously merged close to the capital and the surrounding province of Avila.
