Man Arrested After Wife Found Dead; Dowry Death Case Registered

A heart-wrenching incident in South Delhi has highlighted the grim realities of domestic pressure and dowry harassment. A woman, Akriti (28), married for just over two months, was critically injured on Saturday evening after she apparently fell from the third floor of a government residential complex in Lodhi Colony. She was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where doctors declared her dead on arrival.  

Her grieving family made a formal complaint, and after intense emotional outcries, Delhi Police arrested her husband, Arastu Sikka. The authorities have registered a dowry death case, and the focus of the investigation is now on systemic mental and physical abuse.  

The Truth About a Two-Month Marriage

The tragedy has shocked neighbours in the Pushp Vihar area where the couple had been living since their wedding on April 24. While the relationship started off as a love marriage, Akriti's family says the equation changed immediately after the vows were exchanged:  

Financial Demands: After the wedding, the husband’s family started demanding a car and ₹10 lakh in cash from Akriti’s family, who had a modest income, and they did this aggressively, Akriti’s uncle said.

The Workplace Conflict: Akriti had been the sole breadwinner of her mother and siblings since her father died five years back. Her relatives said her husband, who was unemployed, had tried to stop her working at first. Later he insisted that she hand over her whole monthly salary. This led to a big, violent argument when she insisted on sending a little money home to help her mother.

The Investigation Ahead: The case has taken a bizarre turn with investigators trying to figure out why Akriti went to the Lodhi Colony complex on Saturday evening after leaving work when she had phoned her mother just an hour prior to say she was heading straight home.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal said along with the police investigation, a formal magisterial inquiry has been ordered. Forensic teams are now investigating the family’s claims of physical abuse, going through local CCTV footage and conducting a full post-mortem to find out exactly what happened to cause her tragic fall.
