Lionel Messi Returns to Rosario for Much-Needed Rest After Heartbreaking World Cup Final Loss
Following Argentina's gut-wrenching 1–0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Lionel Messi has quietly returned to his hometown of Rosario to catch his breath and decompress.
His private jet landed near Rosario from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Messi missed a chance to appear in public, despite hundreds of fans gathering at the airport since the early hours of the morning, waving flags and singing. Instead, he headed straight home to the private neighbourhood of Funes to spend some time alone with his wife Antonela Roccuzzo, their three children and his father Jorge.
After the Storm Solace
It’s never easy bearing the weight of a nation. And yes, the loss did take a heavy toll. Messi was open about the defeat on social media, posting his raw feelings to his fans:
"The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. I cherish all the good moments, memories that will last forever—and the support of an entire nation which, combined with this group's hard work and effort, propelled us once again into the ranks of the world's best."
What's Next?
Messi didn’t win the ultimate prize but had a phenomenal tournament, scoring eight goals and walking away as the Golden Boot runner-up after an exhausting campaign.
The legend is expected to head back to the US to resume his club duties with Inter Miami as the MLS season rolls forward but not before taking a few crucial days to step away from the pitch, unplug and recharge surrounded by family in familiar streets.
