India Wins First Medal at 2026 Commonwealth Games as Para Powerlifter Opens Campaign

Historic Beginning for India 
India opened its medal account on the Games’ Day 2 as a para powerlifter delivered a composed show in the men’s category. 

In front of a packed crowd, the athlete contended for bronze with a best lift that put India on the board early. Officials termed it a “confident start” to India’s campaign across multiple disciplines.

The medal was greeted with cheers from teammates and support staff at the venue.

A Reward for Years of Toil  
The podium finish was the result of years of training and discipline. The athlete had spent more than 18 months training specifically for this event, working on technique and consistency under pressure, coaches said.

A coach said it was about staying composed and executing the lift. And that’s what he did when it counted.

Para-athletes have been a growing strength for India in the recent international events, and this medal added to that momentum. 

The Indian Contingent’s Momentum  
The initial success has raised the spirits in the Team India dressing room. With events remaining in wrestling, badminton, athletics and shooting, officials said they are aiming for multiple podium finishes this week.

“It gives everyone confidence,” said a senior official. “One medal gives confidence for the next.”

Athletes from both camps said they were inspired to add to the tally in the coming days.

Nation Celebrates Achievement 
Fans across India took to social media to congratulate the parapowerlifter, calling it a proud moment for the country. The sports minister and several athletes have also put out messages of support.

The medal once again brought out the progress of Indian para-sports on the world stage. It’s the first of many they hope to achieve at CWG 2026 for Team India.
