CM Vijay’s Jana Nayagan UK Release Date Announced; Bookings Now Open

The overseas release of the much-awaited political action drama of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Jana Nayagan, is finally locked after a gruelling seven-month battle with the censor board.

The film’s UK distributor Ahimsa Entertainment said that the movie will be released in theatres across the United Kingdom on July 24, 2026. Advance ticket bookings are already live with major chains like Cineworld, with the distributor reporting thousands of tickets selling out in the first hour of going live.

An Uncut, 'Rated 15' Farewell Outing

The UK release will have the uncut version of the film, with a 15 rating from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

This is somewhat different from its home release in India, where the movie was passed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with an adults-only 'A' certificate, subject to 12 structural modifications – about 20 seconds of direct cuts and about 10 seconds of muted audio. UK audiences will be able to see the hard-hitting action sequences in all their glory.

The distributor described the release as a historic, emotional moment for the diaspora and the ultimate cinematic farewell for the star.

This is not just a movie. It’s a goodbye to the man who gave to us all. UK, we want you in those seats. Let us make this the biggest send-off that Tamil cinema has ever seen!”

Law and Politics Put Off a Farewell

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Bengaluru-based KVN Productions at a mammoth budget of ₹500 crore, Jana Nayagan carries a colossal cultural burden. The film was scheduled for a January 2026 Pongal release and was supposed to be Vijay's swan song in cinema before he turned full-time to politics.

But the film got mired in months of political and legal limbo after internal objections within the censor board stopped it from being certified. In the seven months that followed, the real-world political environment was transformed in a big way: Vijay ran successfully in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and was sworn in as the state’s Chief Minister.

The film was also embroiled in another kind of drama before release when an unedited version of the film was leaked online in April and got over 1.2 crore illegal views before state cyber cells blocked access and arrested a freelance video editor.

Jana Nayagan is a 3 hours, 3 minutes and 11 seconds long film featuring an ensemble star cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj and Priyamani. It also has a power-packed musical score by Anirudh Ravichander.

The July 24 release, with a domestic distribution target of a staggering 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu alone, is the last hurrah for one of the most dominant box-office forces in Indian cinema.
