Chinese Marathon Runner Wins Praise After Finishing Race Despite Unexpected Period
Chinese long-distance runner Li Meizhen has won wide admiration after she completed a marathon despite unexpectedly getting her period during the race.
Her determination has sparked renewed discussions about women’s health, endurance and breaking taboos in sport.
Surprise race struggle
The incident happened at the *Hengshui Lake Marathon. Li was reportedly struck with her period at the 34-kilometre mark – 8 km from the finish line.
She was not physically comfortable, but she chose to keep running rather than stop.
crossed the finish line
Li ran the entire 42.2 km route in around 2 hours and 35 minutes. She told reporters briefly as she crossed the finish line that she was too close to the end to quit.
“I came to this race to finish it,” she said. “There was pain, but the goal was greater.
Outside of sports
Soon her story was all over Chinese social media and international sport news sites. Some praised her tenacity; others took advantage of the situation to talk about the struggles women athletes face in competition.
Competing while menstruating is common but not something people talk about, say sports doctors and coaches. They wanted more support at events, like access to hygiene products and medical advice.
Display of strength
Li’s performance has been praised as showing resilience under pressure. Supporters said it also demonstrated the need to normalise conversations about menstrual health in competitive sport.
Online, athletes and fans sent messages of support, many saying her story will encourage more open discussion so future runners don’t have to choose between their health and their goals.
For Li, it was more than a matter of time or ranking. It was a reminder of how endurance is as much mental as it is physical in sport.
