Bulandshahr Tragedy: Child and Grandfather Die After Electric Shock While Trying to Retrieve Kite

The incident has once again brought to the fore electrical safety and the dangers of retrieving kites near high-voltage power lines.

The incident took place in Khurja in Bulandshahr, police and local reports said. 

A child was trying to detach a kite that was stuck on an electric pole. While climbing near the pole, he reportedly touched an 11,000-volt power line and was given a heavy electric shock.

Locals rushed to the spot, but the boy died on the spot as the current was too strong.

Grandfather sacrifices himself to save his grandson
The grandfather, too, came near the live wire in a desperate attempt to save the child. 

He also touched the high-voltage line and electrocuted himself. He was killed while trying to rescue someone.

The family and the whole neighbourhood were shocked by the double loss. Police and electricity department officials reached the location soon after being informed.

Authorities say the tragedy highlights a risk that comes up every kite season. Kites flying near overhead wires and climbing poles to retrieve them can be fatal.

Experts say that in some cases, even without direct contact, 11,000-volt lines can be dangerous. Officials have warned people several times not to try to remove stuck kites themselves and to call the electricity department for help.

“Kites and power lines don’t go together,” said a local official. “We advise parents and children to stay away from poles and wires.
