Anaya Bangar Recalls 'Humiliating' Medical Assessment During Gender Identity Certification
Anaya Bangar, the daughter of former India cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar, has shared her experience during a medical assessment for transgender identity certification.
She said in a social media video the process was extremely distressing and invasive. ‘I felt very vulnerable,' Anaya said. She was asked to appear before a panel of doctors as part of the documentation required for gender identity certification. She said she was told to take off her clothes so her body could be checked.
She said the assessment was uncomfortable and left her feeling exposed. “The experience was emotionally overwhelming,” she said in the video, asking why she had to go through such a personal examination. Anaya said that the process should be more respectful and sensitive to transgender people seeking legal recognition.
Video sparks debate, support online
After Anaya posted the video, it went viral on social media quickly. Many users backed her, saying her account reflected the emotional toll that transgender people often take when dealing with official procedures.
Many comments asked for a more private, dignified, and compassionate process for gender identity certification. For others, the video was an opportunity to reintroduce the discussion about how policies related to transgender individuals are implemented in practice and whether the procedures in place are sufficient to protect the rights of applicants.
Calls for a more respectful process grow
Anaya’s comments have opened up a larger conversation about transgender rights and legal recognition in India. Although the authorities have laid out procedures for certification under existing law, members of the LGBTQIA+ community and activists have repeatedly called for the process to be transparent, respectful and free from unnecessary intrusion.
“We should focus on balancing the administrative need and the privacy and dignity of the person applying,” they say. To many, Anaya’s story is a testament to how the implementation of a policy can directly impact an individual’s mental well-being.
The video has also opened up a larger debate around the training of medical panels, informed consent, and grievance redressal mechanisms for those who feel the process was not handled properly.
