Air Fryer vs Deep Frying: Which Is the Healthier Choice? Experts Weigh In

Nutrition experts say yes, with a few important caveats.

Why air fryers are having a moment
Air fryers, unlike deep frying, cook food by circulating hot air rapidly. They require little or no oil to get that crispy texture.

That means less fat and fewer calories in such dishes as fries, cutlets, pakoras, and chicken. It’s an easy switch for those looking to manage weight or reduce oil, but it still feels indulgent.

Is air-fried food healthier?
Experts say air frying can cut down on unhealthy fat intake versus food that is immersed in oil.

But the appliance alone doesn’t determine how healthy a meal is.
“One nutritionist said, “An air-fried frozen snack with tonnes of salt and additives is still a processed food. Even with less oil, advantages can be lost due to too much salt, sugary coatings, and ready-to-cook items.

Deep frying does have its faults, though
Deep frying is a method of preparing food in a large amount of hot oil. Regular consumption has been linked to weight gain and an increased risk of heart disease and other health issues.

Another risk is recycling the same cooking oil over and over again. That can create all sorts of harmful compounds, making the food even less healthy.”

More important than the appliance is the balance
Doctors and dietitians say an air fryer is a tool, not the whole strategy.

Fresh vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and home-cooked meals remain the building blocks of a healthy diet. The biggest difference, whether you’re using an air fryer or a regular pan, is fresh ingredients and cutting out the processed foods.

So while air fryers may help you cut down on oil, the real “healthier choice” is what you put in them.
