46 Villages Join Hands to Keep Karnataka Rivers Plastic-Free

Big Step to Save Nature

In a positive step to protect the environment, 46 villages in Karnataka have come together to prevent plastic waste from entering the Phalguni, Nandini, and Shambhavi rivers. The campaign aims to reduce pollution and protect these vital rivers for future generations.

The initiative is meant to create awareness among villagers about the ill-effects of plastic and to motivate them to use eco-friendly alternatives. Local communities will collaborate to enhance waste management and to stop the dumping of plastic into water bodies.

'Hasiru Samvada' Campaign Begins

The movement was launched with a community awareness programme, ‘Hasiru Samvada,' at Alva’s College, Moodbidri.

Environmental experts, students, volunteers, village leaders, and residents met to talk about practical ways of reducing plastic pollution. The program encouraged people to be responsible for protecting rivers by adopting sustainable habits in their daily lives. Communities Driving the Change The campaign will focus on regular clean-up drives, awareness programme in schools and villages, proper waste segregation and promotion of reusable products instead of single-use plastics. Residents will also be trained on better ways to dispose of waste to ensure that plastic doesn’t make its way to nearby streams and rivers.

The organizers believe that real change in the environment can only come through the active participation of local communities. The campaign hopes to build long-term awareness and responsibility towards nature by involving the villages directly.

A River Conservation Model

The Phalguni, Nandini and Shambhavi rivers are major water sources for thousands of people in coastal Karnataka. Plastic pollution-free will benefit wildlife, improve water quality and make for healthier communities
