New Delhi, July 29 . New Delhi will host the first-ever BIMSTEC Traditional Music Festival on August 4, between 6:30 pm and 9 pm at Plenary Hall, Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan.
The concert has been organized by ICCR in association with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and comprises traditional vocalists and instrumentalists from the seven member nations: India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
The ‘Seven Nations, One Symphony’ evening features a handpicked array of folk and classical music genres: India’s Baul vocalists and maestros of tabla, Nepalese Sarangi teams, Bhutanese Zhabdri drumming, Bangladesh’s folk Dal performance, Myanmar’s saung harp players, Sri Lanka’s folk percussion ensemble, and Thailand’s khim and Ranat ek musicians. This multicultural musical tapestry honors age-old traditions and emphasizes cultural harmony.
This comes after Prime Minister Modi announced at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit cultural diplomacy as among the top initiatives alongside an athletics meet and the inaugural BIMSTEC Games.
The festival seeks to promote “people-to-people linkages” through the conservation of endangered art forms and regional harmony.
With free entry to the public, the festival welcomes audiences to engage with the rich musical heritage of the Bay of Bengal in person. It is a living testament to the ability of traditional art to overcome political divisions—a festival of collective identity through the language of music that everybody understands.
