RANCHI: The standoff between the Department of Sports and the Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society (JSSPS) came to the fore when separate felicitation programmes were organised for athlete Florence Barla, who returned last week from her maiden international medal.
The JSSPS a joint venture between Jharkhand Government and the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) with a mission to win medals at 2024 Paris Olympic, and has a handsome budgetary allocation of Rs 20 crore per annum established in 2015.
Florence Barla a promising track and field athlete of JSSPS had won 400m race competition in an invitational athletics meet at Kazakhstan recently.
Jharkhand Sports Minister Amamr Kumar Bauri felicitated Barla in a hurriedly organised ceremony at Sports Authority of Jharkhand office Morhabadi while Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) CMD and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) J Tiwari of JSSPS were not invitee in the function.
Disappointed with approach of sports department, CCL CMD Gopal Singh cum chairman of JSSPS felicitated Barla at his resident on the same day in presence of JSSPS CEO J Tiwari.
However, both side officials refused to say anything on this issue and claimed that ‘all is well’. But a senior officials of sports department said that CCL is not submitting the utilization certificate, which sport department allotted fund to maintain JSSPS according to MoU.
“As per MoU both wings would have to spend equal money (Rs 20 crore budgets per annum) to run JSSPS smoothly. Sports department had asked several times to submit utilization certificate of government side fund but they have not put forward despite several notice,” senior official of sports department said.
JSSPS J Tiwari admitted that they have felicitated Barla at CCL, CMD resident and gifted her mobile and spikes shoes for her practice. He also admitted that there was no invitation from Sports Authority of Jharkhand (SAJ) for felicitation ceremony.
Ranendra Kumar, Director SAJ said, “The felicitation ceremony was conducted hurried as sports minister was in Ranchi so we missed to invite JSSPS chairman and CEO for the function.”
JSSPS is mandated to setup around 15 game-specific academies and a sports university at the Mega Sports Complex at Hotwar on the outskirts of Ranchi. Over the last four years, it has managed to launch nine academies, namely athletics, archery, soccer, taekwondo, boxing, shooting, cycling, wrestling and weightlifting.
